Cessnock City Council is pleased to announce Stage 1 of the Branxton Town Centre upgrade is now complete.
The Branxton CBD has returned being a village centre, rather than a regional thoroughfare, following the opening of the Hunter Expressway.
Council wanted to beautify the town centre and make it more approachable and secure for pedestrians. The outcome was the Branxton Town Centre Public Domain Plan, from which these works have occurred.
This particular project involved the creation of a 240m2 shared zone along Church Street, from the intersection at Maitland Street. The construction of this shared space included new kerb and guttering, a road upgrade with concrete pavement, associated signage and provision for future works.
Cessnock City Council Mayor Jay Suvaal said reclaiming this space will have significant benefits for surrounding businesses, and provide an intimate space for local markets and events.
"Church Street is a no-through road with very few traffic movements, so it is wonderful to see this project completed with a new space for the community to utilise and enjoy," Mayor Suvaal said.
"The next stage will see the creation of bicycle parking infrastructure which will complement the highly anticipated Branxton to Greta Cycleway project."
This project is jointly funded by the NSW Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, and Cessnock City Council.
