A clinical scientist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded a coveted Churchill Fellowship to improve how hospitals monitor artificial intelligence in patient care.
Jonathan Taylor, who specialises in bringing AI into healthcare, is one of the newly appointed Churchill Fellows. The fellowship, which was set up as a living legacy to Sir Winston Churchill, supports individuals from different backgrounds, experiences and professions to gain global insights to spark positive change in the UK.
Jonathan will learn from international health centres how they oversee AI in routine clinical settings, specifically how they detect and manage changes in AI performance over time. He will translate these findings into practical approaches that help ensure healthcare AI continues to deliver safe, effective care for patients long after it has been introduced.
Talking about his award, Jonathan said:
"I'm incredibly honoured to have been awarded a Churchill Fellowship. Having worked on AI implementation for many years, I've become increasingly aware that we need to think beyond deployment. This Fellowship will allow me to learn from pioneering global organisations about how they monitor AI once it's in routine clinical use, and bring that learning back to help develop practical guidance for the NHS."
