The condition of Council-managed roads in the Shoalhaven and the efforts underway to fix them, will be discussed at a public information session in Nowra this week.
The presentation will detail the findings of a recent condition analysis of Shoalhaven's 1,900-kilometre road network and will provide a thorough look at the challenges faced by Council to maintain and repair roads across the Local Government Area (LGA).
"We recognise that the condition and upkeep of local roads is one of the community's highest priorities and we want to assist people to gain an in-depth understanding of our road network and what's underway to upgrade and strengthen our infrastructure, in-line with what our community expects and needs," said Director City Services, Kevin Norwood.
"Our commitment is to present the facts, share the costs of this work transparently and the actions we're taking now and into the future to address this challenge," he said.
Specialist consultants were engaged by Council in 2025 to use techniques including vehicle-based laser measurements to assess the condition of the road surface and the pavement below.
The data collected indicated that 133 kilometres (7 per cent) of the Shoalhaven's 1,900-kilometre road network have very poor underlying pavement conditions which are compromising the overall health of the road.
A further five percent of roads are in a poor condition and require reconstruction before deteriorating further.
Almost 70 per cent of the surface of the roads is considered to be in good condition, with 50 per cent in very good to good condition, while 88 per cent of the pavement below the surface is in good condition, with 66 per cent in very good to good condition.
The data shows that the areas of disrepair are equally distributed across Council Wards, with no one area displaying better quality roads than another.
The roads presentation will follow an Extra Ordinary Meeting of Council on Thursday 30 April from 5.30pm.
The discussion will also be live streamed on Council's website.
