Spotlight On Workshops At BSF 2025

This year, the University is co-hosting the 194th British Science Festival with Liverpool John Moores University.

Taking place from Wednesday, 10 September to Sunday, 14 September, the BSF features more than 100 events - here we highlight some inspiring University-led talks, discussions, and hands-on workshops.

✏️ Super Power Zines!
Led by the University of Liverpool in partnership with Asylum Link Merseyside, this interactive session invites participants to craft their own zines, explore DIY publishing culture, and discuss the therapeutic potential of art and storytelling for people affected by trauma and displacement.

Tune into Unheard Animal Worlds
In this session, Dr Louise Roberts invites attendees to journey into the sensory worlds of animals to discover how species perceive the world far beyond human senses revealing the hidden richness of animal cognition.

🪐 Voyager at 50: "Is There Anybody Out There?"
As part of a talk-and-panel tribute, Dr Hannah Little marks the 50th anniversary of NASA's Voyager probes. Attendees can explore the scientific legacy of their golden records, planetary exploration milestones, and the tantalising question: "Is there anybody out there?".

🦠 What the Phage?!
In a lively session, Dr Heather Allison uses AR and VR to explore the fascinating, unseen world of bacteriophages - aka phages - the viruses that infect bacteria - and their growing promise in medicine. Attendees will learn about phage therapy, antibiotic alternatives, and the microscopic hunters currently redefining microbial science.

🧫 "Welcome to Microbe City!"
Dr Jontana Allkja leads this interactive workshop where participants explore the microbial ecosystems living all around us - on surfaces, in our bodies, and in urban environments. Led by researchers from the Open Innovation Hub for Antimicrobial Surfaces and the National Biofilm Innovation Centre, this hands-on session will shine a light on how microbes shape our health and planet.

🎨 Skulls, Skeletons and Bones: Animal Anatomy Drawing Workshop
In an art-meets-science workshop led by Dr Fay Penrose and Dr Rosie MacDiarmid, from the School of Veterinary Science, participants will draw real animal bones and skeletons. Through guided observation, attendees gain a deeper understanding of anatomy, evolution, and morphology.
