Statement on UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture

The Department of Home Affairs and the Australian Border Force (ABF) value the role of the United Nations (UN) Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) and welcome visits to immigration detention facilities as part of this important work.

The ABF has facilitated all UN SPT visits to immigration detention facilities since their arrival in Australia. The Department and ABF welcome engagement and oversight to enable further transparency in the operations of detention. Scrutiny from external bodies helps to ensure detainees held in immigration detention continue to be treated humanely and fairly. These parties include parliamentary committees, the Commonwealth Ombudsman and the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Internal assurance and external oversight processes are in place to ensure that the health, safety and wellbeing of all detainees is maintained.
