TAFE NSW workers rally as all campus security officers cut

TAFE NSW workers are rallying at the Granville campus in Western Sydney as Berejiklian government cuts see campuses across the state lose their security officers.

The sacking of all TAFE NSW's 87 security officers, comes as part of wider government cuts of 678 frontline jobs, with more than than 302 jobs set to go from Sydney campuses, TAFE NSW's own documents have revealed. That includes 116 jobs from Sydney Metro, 50 from North Sydney, 42 from Western Sydney, and 92 from South Western Sydney campuses.

"Rather than see people employed directly by TAFE NSW, the Berejiklian government is cutting campus security jobs - forcing people into insecure work with outsourced security providers," Troy Wright, assistant secretary of the Community and Public Sector Union NSW, said.

"TAFE NSW campuses will be less safe for students and staff as outsourced providers cut corners to extract every bit of profit.

"TAFE NSW is the best pathway to get people out of the house and ready for work. Instead of investing it, the Berejiklian government is cutting jobs, selling campuses, and pushing students online.

"How does vocational, hands on training work through a laptop? Do we want plumbers and sparkies who learnt their trade through zoom fixing our homes? A hairdresser cutting our hair after only learning from home?"

"Gladys Berejiklian and Dominic Perrottet are deliberately dismantling TAFE NSW piece-by-piece.

"It's straight out of the privatisation playbook - under resource the system and then sell it off claiming the private market will do a better job. TAFE NSW should never be privatised."

Mr Wright was joined in the rally outside the Ultimo campus with Labor's Shadow Minister for TAFE NSW, Jihad Dib and affected TAFE NSW workers.
