Three Campbellfield speeders have cars impounded

Fawkner Highway Patrol officers have prevented disaster after detecting three cars travelling at more than double the speed limit in Campbellfield last night.

Officers were performing speed detection on the Hume Highway about 10pm on 10 November when they detected a vehicle travelling south at an alleged speed of 178km/hr in an area with a limit of 80km/hr.

They intercepted the white Ford Falcon and found its driver was an 18-year-old probationary licence holder from Campbellfield.

He will be charged on summons with conduct endangering serious injury, drive at speed dangerous, and exceed the speed limit by more than 45km/hr.

His car was impounded for 30 days.

Just over an hour later they detected two white Volkswagen hatchbacks allegedly racing each other north on the Hume Highway.

The vehicles were allegedly travelling at 153 km/hr in a 70 km/hr zone.

The vehicles were intercepted, and drivers spoken to.

The first driver, a 24-year-old Mitcham man, held a probationary licence.

The second driver, a 19-year-old Lalor man, also was a probationary licence holder.

Both are expected to be charged on summons with drive at a speed dangerous, engage in a race, exceed the speed limit by more than 45km/hr and failing to display 'P' plates.

Both vehicles were impounded for 30 days.
