TU/e ninth in Europe by value of 'deep tech spin-offs'

Eindhoven University of Technology

TU/e is the only Dutch university in the top 20 European universities whose deep tech spin-offs have the greatest value, in ninth spot. That's according to The 2023 European Deep Tech Report by Dealroom.co. As a region Eindhoven ranks 11th in Europe.

TU/e owes its leading position to a good number of very promising companies whose origins stem from TU/e, and that together have raised hundreds of millions in capital to fund further growth. These include Smart Photonics (photonics), Xeltis (cardiovascular tissue culture), Effect Photonics (photonics), Ioniqa (advanced plastic recycling), Ambagon (molecular medicine) and Microsure (medical robotics).

"The results show how important TU/e is as a source of new high-tech activity and future earning power," says Robert-Jan Smits, Executive Board president. "I am proud that the results of our scientists and professionals contribute so much to solutions in areas such as semicon and photonics, complex molecular systems and sustainability."

In terms of venture capital investments in deep tech, the Brainport Eindhoven region ranks 11th in Europe in 2023. That is well above regions such as Amsterdam and Barcelona. Topping the list are Stockholm, London and Paris.

The report ranks the Netherlands fourth in Europe as a country in terms of the value of all university deep tech spin-offs, after the UK, Germany and Switzerland.

Deep tech is fundamentally new science and technology that is finding its way into products and companies for the first time. Think, for example, of photonics or quantum technology or new AI technology. Dealroom.co's report charts the situation in European situation regarding deep tech.
