Nottingham researchers are calling for volunteers to help with a new study into typhoid and paratyphoid A, which sees 13 million cases every year.

The study is looking for healthy volunteers to take part in the study to test a new vaccine against typhoid and paratyphoid A fever, highly contagious and potentially life-threatening infections.

In order to test if the vaccine works to protect against paratyphoid A fever, after vaccination with the new vaccine or a control vaccine, they will be challenging all participants with the bacteria that could cause paratyphoid fever.

Participants will be treated with antibiotics as soon as they show symptoms of infection, or 14 days after drinking the bacteria even if they do not have symptoms.

The study is being run by the University of Nottingham Health Service, in collaboration with the Oxford Vaccine Group, and is funded by the Serum Institute of India.

Participants for the trial should be aged between 18 and 55 years old, and in good health, and will be provided with reimbursement for time, inconvenience, and travel. Participants will receive up to £4,410 if they remain in the study for the entire period and attend all the scheduled visits required for them.

With this study, we're aiming to evaluate a promising new vaccine that could help protect against paratyphoid A fever, a serious illness that affects millions each year. We're looking for healthy volunteers to help us take an important step toward improving global health."

The total study participation time is 7 months, with participants required to attend the University of Nottingham Health Service (Cripps Health Centre) and Nottingham University Hospitals – Queen's Medical Centre site for all study visits and Oxford Vaccine Group on challenge administration day (travel will be arranged).
