Western Australians encouraged to strengthen mental health through community

  • Mental Health Week 2020 begins today through to October 17
  • Mental wellbeing and connection to community is more important than ever
  • Over 200 events being held in Western Australian communities
  • McGowan Government has committed more than $1 billion to mental health in Budget
  • Mental Health Week 2020 begins today (October 10) and Western Australians are encouraged to take part in activities being held across the State.

Each year Mental Health Week aims to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing, and that message is more important than ever given the unprecedented times we are facing.

This year's theme is 'Strengthening our Community - Live, Learn, Work, Play', in recognition that there are many aspects to achieving strong, resilient communities and good mental health, and that we are not alone as we recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taking part in social activities, physical exercise and educational and employment opportunities all play key roles in strengthening mental health and making us #StrongerTogether.

There are more than 200 events taking place in metropolitan and regional communities across Western Australia to foster social connections and provide personal and professional development opportunities.

There is something for all levels and abilities including social events such as art exhibitions, concerts and campfires, and physical activities including walks, dance and sailing, through to presentations, workshops and training.

In addition to the events being held, Mental Health Week packs are being handed out at train stations and to FIFO workers at the airport, to raise awareness of how to find help or support someone with a mental health issue.

For the first time, more than a billion dollars has been allocated to mental health, alcohol and other drug services for Western Australia.

The 2020-21 State Budget increased funding to the Mental Health Commission by 7.5 per cent to $1.013 billion.

As stated by Mental Health Minister Roger Cook:

"Mental Health Week promotes participation and inclusion in our communities, which is so important for our mental health - and gives everyone the opportunity to get involved.

"It's the things that we do on a daily basis that bring us together and play a crucial role in strengthening our mental health.

"This Mental Health Week, Western Australians are encouraged to ensure the everyday settings where we 'live, learn, work and play' are also good places to be for our health and wellbeing.

"Each year, one in every five Australians experience a mental health issue, which is one reason why the McGowan Government is committed to supporting initiatives like Mental Health Week.

"We've all had a challenging year. I'll be taking action this week to look after my own mental health and I urge everyone to do the same. Whether you enjoy exercising, reading or catching up with loved ones, it's so important to prioritise your mental wellbeing.

"The McGowan Government continues to place a huge emphasis on mental health.

"For the first time ever, we are spending more than $1 billion a year to improve the lives and wellbeing of Western Australians right across the State."
