World Plumbing Day 2020

Right now, across the world, 900 million people do not have access to clean water according to Unicef. That's one in eight humans that are at risk of disease every time they drink water.

Most of us in Australia, turn on the tap without a second thought, we wash daily, flush our toilets, wash our laundry, heat our houses… and the list goes on.

March 11, 2020 was World Plumbing Day, celebrating the impact that plumbers and plumbing has on our way of life. AATIS would like to acknowledge the incredible work of all plumbers in sustaining our way of life.

This year, AATIS was fortunate enough to be invited along to the Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC) to join in with their celebration.

PICAC is an industry led organisation that was formed in 2009 with the primary purpose of providing courses in Green Plumbing, which was to address the skills shortage in sustainable plumbing within the industry at the time.

These days, PICAC also offers pre-apprenticeships and Certificate III apprenticeship courses' (Plumbing and Sprinkler Fitting), through to a range of Certificate IVs and post-trade courses plus construction industry safety and OHS courses.

World Plumbing Day at PICAC featured an Apprentice Skills Competition, with the winners having the opportunity to compete in the US. A luncheon was also put on by local apprentice chefs from the local Australian National Institute of Business & Technology, which was enjoyed by all students, teachers and staff.

The competition ran all day, giving school tours the opportunity to check out the eight apprentice plumbers and five sprinkler fitting apprentices completing their delegated project. The apprentices all put in a tremendous amount of work to complete the projects and the winners were announced at the end of the day.
