The highly regarded Writers' Retreat returns for Words Out West 2026, taking place on Saturday 20 June and led by experienced authors and writing mentors.
Held at the picturesque Bunya Mountains, the retreat will offer emerging and established writers a welcoming space to hone their craft through a full day of immersive workshops.
Guided by admirable facilitators, attendees will benefit from the rich knowledge and shared experiences that lead to great storytelling.
Merinda Dutton, a proud Gumbaynggirr and Barkindji woman, emerging writer and co-founder of the online Blackfulla Bookclub, will lead the workshop Writing Between Worlds, exploring storytelling across cultures and perspectives.
Writer, music-maker and poet Matt Hetherington will guide participants through Ginko: a haiku walk, a creative outdoor session inspired by the tradition of writing in nature.
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Andrew Smith said the Words Out West Festival continues to bring people together and strengthen the region's creative spirit.
"Having Merinda Dutton and Matt Hetherington lead this year's Writers' Retreat is a fantastic opportunity for our local storytellers to learn from diverse voices and explore new creative possibilities," Mayor Smith said.
"Their experience will encourage participants to grow in confidence, connect with others, and enjoy a day that celebrates creativity across the Western Downs."
The Writers' Retreat remains an important part of the broader Words Out West Festival program, fostering talent and celebrating the region's love of storytelling.
