In 2022 NATO continued to monitor Allied citizens' perceptions on defence and security, charting support for key metrics including collective defence, the transatlantic bond and NATO membership. Each wave of Alliance-wide survey data is published in the Secretary General's Annual Report. This extended report includes trend data on familiarity with NATO, support for defence spending, and support for Ukraine.
About the study
Coverage: 30 NATO Allies plus Finland and Sweden: general population over 18 years of age.
Sample size: In all countries polled online a sample of at least 1,000 respondents per country was achieved. In countries surveyed by telephone at least 500 individuals per country were interviewed. 30,993 interviews were conducted in total.
Methodology: Online interviews, quotas applied on gender, age and region. In Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia, interviews were conducted via telephone.
All data has been weighted according to the latest population statistics.
Total data are calculated based on population distribution in the 30 Allied nations. Data from Finland and Sweden are not included in calculation of the NATO total.
Fieldwork period: 7-29 November 2022.
Margin of error: The survey uses non-probability sampling. The indicative margin of error of +/- 3%.
Trend data: 2021 data are based on interviews conducted by Kantar among 28,909 adults in the 30 NATO member countries between 12 November - 2 December. 2020 data are based on interviews conducted by Kantar among 28,517 in November 2020.
