Art, Ceramics, and Chocolate Combine in Pioneering Studio

R L Foote Design Studio + Chocolates by Ryan L Foote

Acclaimed Melbourne-based artist, designer and chocolatier, Ryan L Foote, has designed and opened a new concept multi-disciplinary art and culinary space in Clifton Hill. Ryan came to prominence in the art world with his large installations in high-profile venues including the National Gallery of Victoria, Federation Square Melbourne, Melbourne's GPO Building and Flinders Lane Gallery. His new concept space brings together a multi-functional sculpture, ceramic and design studio, along with a gallery, showroom and event space. Part art and part alchemy has always been the creative process behind product development for Ryan, whose diverse background provides a unique source of technical know-how and creative innovation. He began his career creating large sculptural art installations before becoming involved in set design for events leading to his interest in food design and ceramicware.

The state-of-the-art workshop features custom-designed ceramic casting tables, drying shelves, water-wall glazing station and glaze lab. The highly considered and contemporary approach synonymous with the studio's design aesthetic is reflected in the space's customised design and interior which Ryan designed himself.

Designed to be experiential and immersive – it is a space made to be shared. The studio operates as a commercial ceramic factory from Monday to Friday where you can drop in to view the craftspeople at work. On weekends, the studio offers classes teaching students the craft and science behind ceramic slipcasting, glazing and mould-making. Friends or colleagues can also book in private workshops including prosecco and chocolates.

Upstairs, you'll find a gallery and a showroom space with a diverse range of ceramics along with Ryan's signature Crystalline Glaze Range which involves the alchemy of crystals growing during the firing process.
