Business and university leaders will advise the Morrison Government on how to improve the commercialisation of university research and turn ideas into jobs, opportunities and innovation.
Minister for Education Dan Tehan today announced an expert panel that would provide input to the $5.8 million scoping project to accelerate university research translation.
"The scoping project is part of our Government's plan to invest in ideas and innovation that help power Australia's economic recovery from COVID-19," Mr Tehan said.
"This project will complement the additional $1 billion for university research and $157 million for research infrastructure announced in the 2020 budget.
"Australia must get better at turning university research into new products, job creation, productivity gains and economic growth.
"The working group of business and university leaders will use their first-hand experience and knowledge to help design a better system in the national interest."
The expert panel will consist of:
- Professor Michelle Simmons AO, Director of the Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology
- Dr Alan Finkel AO, Chief Scientist of Australia
- Ms Laura Tyler, Chief Technical Officer, BHP
- Mr Dig Howitt, CEO and President, Cochlear
- Professor Paul Wellings CBE, Vice-Chancellor, University of Wollongong
- Ms Shemara Wikramanayake, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Macquarie Group
- Professor Deborah Terry AO, Vice-Chancellor, University of Queensland
- Mr Jeff Connolly, Chairman and CEO, Siemens Australia and New Zealand
- Mr Andrew Stevens, Chair, Industry Innovation and Science Australia
