Brian Feldman Named C.N.H. Long Professor Of Pediatrics

Yale University

Dr. Brian Feldman, who has made significant discoveries about how hormones regulate stem cells to promote beneficial differentiation and regeneration in living organisms, was recently appointed the C.N.H. Long Professor of Pediatrics (Endocrinology). His appointment, which was effective last summer, is for a term of 10 years, renewable by the dean of the Yale School of Medicine (YSM).

Feldman, who joined the YSM faculty last year, has a secondary appointment in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology in Yale's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He also serves as chief of the Section of Endocrinology and Diabetes in the Department of Pediatrics at YSM.

In his research, he has identified selective regulatory hormonal signals that aid in the development of treatments for metabolic diseases, muscle disorders, and cancer. His current research broadly concerns the role of steroid hormones in determining cell fate, initially focusing on glucocorticoid-induced circadian alterations in carbohydrate metabolism, and more recently on the genesis of brown fat and modulation of systemic Whole body energy expenditure. His work has direct bearing on obesity, Type 2 diabetes and the determination of cell fate, and identified novel druggable targets.

Feldman has received numerous accolades for his work, including the Clinical Scholars Award from the Pediatric Endocrine Society, the Young Investigator Award from the Society for Pediatric Research, and the Early Investigator Award from the Endocrine Society. He was awarded the NIH (National Institute of Health) Director's New Innovator Award, which supports creative early-career investigators pursing highly innovative, high-impact research projects. For his contributions as a physician-scientist, he was elected to membership into The American Association for Clinical Investigation (ASCI).

He is also dedicated to supporting the career development of other physician-scientists.

A graduate of Brandeis University, Feldman earned his M.D. and Ph.D. at Stanford University. He completed a residency in Pediatrics at Harvard University in the Boston Children's Hospital. He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he then joined the faculty, most recently serving as the Walter L. Miller Distinguished Professor Endowed Chair of Pediatric Endocrinology.
