Western Power continues to play an important role in providing Western Australians with vocational education and training opportunities with 22 apprentices and trainees graduating from its entry-level programs today.
The training programs are part of the McGowan Government’s commitment to providing meaningful employment opportunities and planning for the future economic needs of the State.
Western Power’s entry-level programs, which currently have 127 people enrolled, enable Western Australians to gain nationally recognised qualifications, while also providing invaluable and necessary on-the-job training and experience.
The programs include Business Traineeships, Field Protection and Telecommunication Traineeships, Electrical and Mechanical Apprenticeships and an Engineering Graduate program, which combines tertiary education with on-the-job experience in the evolving energy industry.
The placements provide trainees with new skills, strengthened networking capabilities and confidence in the workplace, while providing a pipeline of talent and skills in the energy sector.
As stated by Energy Minister Bill Johnston:
“This year has been a hard year for many, in particular our people in vocational education and training whose apprenticeships and traineeships may have been affected by COVID-19.
“As part of our COVID recovery plans we’ve embarked on an investment drive to boost employment and economic growth. Essential to this is ensuring we have training programs in place for people.
“Western Power’s entry-level programs are an excellent example of this as they provide a range of opportunities, from business traineeships and apprentices to engineering graduates.
“WA’s energy sector is transforming with the uptake of renewables and new technology and it is vital that we provide opportunities for people to become part of our brighter energy future. I congratulate all the graduates and wish them well in their careers.”
