Broome will soon have a dedicated animal welfare inspector after the McGowan Government doubled funding to the RSPCA WA in a major boost for animal welfare in the State's north.
RSPCA WA is now advertising for a new Broome-based inspector, who will work with local government, rescue groups, police and the community to respond to and prevent animal cruelty in the Kimberley.
The McGowan Government is delivering on its 2021 election commitment to double the State Government's annual grant to the RSPCA WA.
RSPCA WA currently has 11 inspectors covering Perth, Bunbury, Geraldton, Albany and Kalgoorlie, with the funding increase to support the new Broome-based position and a new metropolitan inspector.
The McGowan Government has committed to modernising Western Australia's Animal Welfare Act following an extensive review of the State's animal welfare system released in June.
As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"The RSPCA plays a vital role in promoting and supporting companion animal welfare in the community.
"Doubling funding to the RSPCA allows the organisation to expand into regions that previously may not have been as well serviced, like the Kimberley.
"We know Western Australians love their pets and place a high importance on good animal welfare, and this new inspector position will be welcomed by the Broome community."
As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:
"Kimberley people care deeply about animals, and having a locally based animal welfare inspector will help to encourage good animal welfare in our community.
"The Broome community has been calling for a local inspector for years, and I am proud to be part of the team delivering the funding to see this become a reality."
