Building A Better, Safer Health System

The new $7 million multi-deck car park extension at the Lyell McEwin Hospital will open tomorrow, providing safe and secure parking for staff, patients and visitors.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Stephen Wade said the works were part of a billion-dollar health infrastructure spend which is easing pressure on the state's Emergency Departments and boosting patient services closer to home.

"The new car park expansion will support the increase in future services as construction begins on Lyell McEwin Hospital's new Emergency Department (ED) and new Short Stay Mental Health Unit (SSMHU)," Minister Wade said.

"Originally scheduled for completion in July, the additional 205-space, five-level extension to the western side of the existing multi-deck car park will open tomorrow ahead of schedule, resulting in a total of 1,432 car parks now available on site for the safety and convenience of staff and consumers.

"In addition, Lyell McEwin Hospital will later this year be one of the three major hospitals in South Australia reducing their energy bills, as installation of 274 kW solar panels has also commenced on the roof of the multi-storey car park extension.

"We know South Australian hospitals are big consumers of non-renewable energy, so it's important for us to look at ways to make them more sustainable, while also making sure our services deliver value for the taxpayer dollar."

As part of the new car park extension, the additional spaces also alleviate the loss of about 67 car parks that are being removed to make way for the new Emergency Department construction works.

In addition, the Marshall Liberal Government has also entered a lease agreement with Northwest Healthcare Australian Property Pty Ltd and Perpetual Corporate Trust for 250 additional dedicated staff car park spaces on Haydown Road.

Northern Adelaide Local Health Network Acting Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Andrew McGill, said the completion of the new car park earlier than expected will help to improve accessibility as demand on the hospital grows.

"Providing a safe environment for our staff, patients, and visitors is a high priority," Mr McGill said.

"We have listened to staff concerns and we are working with them to make our hospitals and surrounds safer.

"The new car park extension incorporates lighting, signage, and full weather protection to ensure safety and security for all users, whilst CCTV is already installed within areas in the existing car park section."
