A critical incident has been declared after a man was shot during a police operation in Sydney's south-west this morning.
Officers from Campbelltown Police Area Command identified a stolen blue Subaru Impreza on Copperfield Drive, Rosemeadow, about 10.30am (Wednesday 4 November 2020) and alerted other officers after losing sight of the car near local shops.
The vehicle was located by police about 10.40am and a pursuit was initiated after the driver – a 33-year-old man – allegedly failed to stop at Campbelltown and Raby roads, St Andrews.
Police followed the car for a short period to a service station on Narellan Road, Narellan, where the driver allegedly rammed a police vehicle a number of times before threatening customers with a machete.
One male passenger reportedly got out of the vehicle and fled the scene. He was arrested a short time later and taken to Camden Police Station.
Shots were fired by police during the confrontation, with the 33-year-old man sustaining a wound to the leg.
He then allegedly fled the scene on foot before carjacking a black Subaru. During the carjacking, the driver received minor injuries.
The man then allegedly carjacked another vehicle, a Holden Cruise, on the Hume Highway at Appin, assaulting the male driver, who suffered minor injuries.
With assistance from PolAir, police tracked the vehicle until it stopped in the M5 East tunnel, at the Marsh Street exit, near Arncliffe.
Just after 11.15am, the male driver was approached by officers from the Dog Unit, South West Metropolitan Operations Support Group and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, and a taser was deployed to affect the man's arrest.
During the struggle, a male sergeant and the police dog sustained minor injuries.
The Ambarvale man was taken under police guard to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition for treatment for his leg wound and dog bite injuries.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incidents are ongoing.
A critical incident team from Bankstown Police Area Command will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will also be subject to independent review.
