Dana-Farber Faculty Join American Arts & Sciences Academy

Alan D'Andrea, MD, and Judy Garber, MD, PhD, both of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, have been elected as Members of The American Academy of Arts & Sciences. The Academy is one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. D'Andrea and Garber are among more than 250 leaders in academia, the arts, science industry, journalism, philanthropy, policy and research chosen for membership this year.

Dr. D'Andrea is the director of the Center for DNA Damage and Repair and the Susan F. Smith Center for Women's Cancers at Dana-Farber. He is the Alvan T. and Viola D. Fuller American Cancer Society Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. D'Andrea is internationally known for his research in DNA damage and DNA repair. His laboratory also investigates the pathogenesis of Fanconi Anemia, a human genetic disease characterized by a DNA repair defect, bone marrow failure, and cancer predisposition.

Dr. Garber is Chief of the Division of Cancer Genetics and Prevention and the Susan F. Smith Chair at Dana-Farber. She is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and past president of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). She conducts research in clinical cancer genetics, with a special focus in genetics of breast cancer and is a leader in research into the characteristics and treatment of triple negative breast cancer, the most common form in women with BRCA1 mutations and an expert in Li-Fraumeni Syndrome.

Founded in 1780 in the midst of revolution - by John Adams, John Hancock, and others - the Academy's membership and work have changed greatly over the centuries while remaining faithful to a charter founded on ideals that celebrate the life of the mind, the importance of knowledge, and the belief that the arts and sciences are "necessary to the interest, honor, dignity and happiness of a free, independent and virtuous people."

Induction ceremonies for new members will take place in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in October 2026.
