Drinking alcohol in public places

The following comments can be attributed to City of Greater Geelong Director

Planning, Design and Development Gareth Smith:

Is alcohol able to be consumed in public places such as parks in the City of Greater

Geelong?

With the easing of restrictions in regional Victoria, we understand more people will want to

visit our public spaces and make the most of longer days and warmer weather. We are

fortunate to have many appealing open spaces to enjoy in Greater Geelong.

We encourage people to get out and about and we also have a responsibility to make sure

our public spaces are safe and welcoming for everyone to enjoy. Look out for each other,

consider those around you and act responsibly at our parks and beaches.

Our local laws are in place for the safety of the community and so everyone can enjoy these

outdoor spaces together.

In line with our Neighbourhood Amenity Local Law 2014, community members may

consume alcohol in public spaces during daylight hours, under the condition that it doesn’t

interfere with others’ quiet enjoyment of the space.

Permits are required for serving or consuming alcohol in public spaces between sunset and

sunrise.

Is alcohol able to be consumed at City of Greater Geelong beaches?

Yes, as above for City-managed beaches between sunrise and sunset. This may be different

for beaches where the City is not the land manager.

What is the fine for drinking alcohol in a public place?

Fines of $495 may be incurred by individuals found to be breaching local laws, such as

consuming alcohol in public spaces after sunset, or in a manner that negatively interferes

with other community members.

How many fines for consuming alcohol in a public place have been issued in the past

12 months?

Victoria Police has issued seven fines under our local law in the past 12 months. No fines

have been issued by the City.
