European Universities: Perspectives From AURORA

What will the universities of the future look like? This question was at the heart of the event "Impulses for the Higher Education Strategy 2040: European Universities as Drivers of Innovation for the Universities of the Future?", which took place on April 28th at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna. Representatives from politics, higher education institutions and European networks joined the event.

The event was organized by the Montanuniversität Leoben and the University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten. Through their alliances EURECA-PRO and E³UDRES², they invited participants to engage in dialogue and take stock of current developments. Numerous European University alliances with Austrian participation were represented - a clear sign of Austria's active role in this initiative.

Eva-Maria Holzleitner, Federal Minister for Women, Science and Research, emphasized: "The European Universities show that Europe is capable of thinking big, overcoming borders, and creating something new together. This initiative is one of the most ambitious and important projects of the European Union in the higher education sector in recent years. Austria is not only part of the European Higher Education Area - we actively help shape it and contribute our strengths in a targeted way."

Innsbruck in the European Higher Education Area

The University of Innsbruck also took part in the dialogue and contributed its experience from the AURORA alliance. This network connects universities across Europe and provides momentum for innovative teaching, social engagement, and work on global challenges.

More than six years after the launch of the European Universities initiative, the event made it clear how strongly these networks are already influencing the structures of higher education institutions. For the University of Innsbruck, this is particularly evident in new forms of collaboration: students benefit from international learning opportunities, researchers collaborate more closely across national borders, and topics such as sustainability and social responsibility are moving even further into focus.

Impulses for the Higher Education Strategy 2040

At the same time, it became clear in Vienna that the path toward "true" European universities is not yet complete. Questions surrounding joint degrees, long-term funding, and institutional frameworks remain key issues - also from the perspective of Innsbruck's involvement in AURORA.

The contributions from the various alliances will now feed into the further development of Austria's Higher Education Strategy 2040. The aim is to secure the long-term momentum of the European Universities initiative and to anchor its approaches more firmly across the entire higher education system.

For the University of Innsbruck, one thing is clear: cooperation within the AURORA framework not only opens up new perspectives for students and researchers but also strengthens the university's role as an active part of a shared European Higher Education Area.
