Foreign Affairs Minister to participate in meeting about Venezuela crisis with Lima Group

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will participate in a meeting of representatives of the Lima Group and the International Contact Group on June 3, 2019, in New York City, New York.

The Minister, along with foreign affairs ministers Néstor Popolizio of Peru and Roberto Ampuero of Chile, as representatives of the Lima Group, will meet with Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and foreign affairs ministers Augusto Santos Silva of Portugal and Rodolfo Nin Novoa of Uruguay to discuss how the international community can support the Venezuelan people in their struggle for a peaceful transition to democracy.

  • The Lima Group was established on August 8, 2017, to coordinate efforts and bring international pressure on the illegitimate Maduro dictatorship in Venezuela. It includes the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Saint Lucia.

  • The International Contact Group on Venezuela was established on January 26, 2019, and includes representation from Costa Rica, Ecuador, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Uruguay.

  • More than 3 million Venezuelans have been forced to flee their homes since 2015 in search of food, health care and other basic services.
