Future proofing our CBD’s creative and community spaces – Wollongong

Like many regional cities, Wollongong’s city centre is changing, with more people choosing to live in the CBD and enjoying the renewal of social and cultural activities that this brings.

As a major provider of spaces where people participate in cultural, community and social activities, Wollongong Council is keen to understand what the community thinks about how these ‘social infrastructure’ spaces should look, feel and function like, into the future.

Right now, we’re reviewing the social infrastructure in the Wollongong CBD, and we are surveying local residents who live, work, or socialise in the city centre, to seek their views on the quality of the spaces Council provides to the community: the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, the Wollongong Town Hall, Wollongong Library, Wollongong Art Gallery, Illawarra Museum, the Pioneer Hall, Wollongong Youth Centre and the Old Court House & Studios.

We want to know how the built form of these facilities is meeting the needs and expectations of our community so that we can improve our understanding how we can improve these assets for the future.

“It’s exciting to be planning for Wollongong’s cultural and social future,” Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Council sets short, medium and long-term goals when it comes to planning for our city’s future and these are reflective of the agreed goals in the Community Strategic Plan.

“We know it’s a priority to have a creative and vibrant city and a connected an engaged community and facilities like our libraries, cultural hubs and social spaces allow for this to happen. By asking our community what they want and need, we can start planning so we can incorporate improvements and plans into our Operational Plan and Delivery Program.”

An online survey is available through Council’s Join the Conversation pages on our website.

Council is seeking community feedback on the eight CBD community and cultural facilities before 30 June 2022.
