Goulburn Mulwaree Council is planning an upgrade to the sedimentation lagoons at the Goulburn Water Treatment Plant to help ensure the plant can continue to provide safe, reliable drinking water into the future.
The treatment plant process removes dirt, sediment and other particles from the raw water. These particles are separated from the water and collected as a wet sludge. The sludge is dried in the sedimentation lagoons before it can be safely removed and disposed.
The proposed project will create larger lagoons, making it easier for the sludge to dry, improving the management of this material. The upgrade will help support the ongoing operation of the Water Treatment Plant and improve its long-term capacity.
The project has been identified as a "controlled action" under the Australian Government's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act because of potential impacts on threatened plants, animals and ecological communities. The proposal will be assessed through a Preliminary Documentation process.
Council invites residents and interested organisations to review the project information before consultation closes on 22 July 2026 and provide feedback through the available consultation channels: in person at the Civic Centre or Goulburn Mulwaree Library (184-194 Bourke Street, Goulburn NSW 2580), online through Council's Your Say platform, or by phoning Council's Utilities Department on 02 4823 4444.
Please note the exhibition timeframes for this project have been dictated by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
