September is Cancer Awareness Month and a time to come together to support and honour Canadians impacted by this disease.
Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada and the numbers speak for themselves. 2 in 5 Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and approximately 1 in 4 Canadians is expected to die from the disease.
Awareness is important and continuing to invest in cancer research is critical. Canadian researchers have made, and continue to make, significant contributions. Over the last 25 years, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has invested nearly $4 billion, leading to scientific breakthroughs in cancer therapies, prevention, and detection. Canadian researchers have developed a method to deliver chemotherapy more directly and with fewer side effects. They are also exploring novel immunotherapies which are promising treatments against aggressive types of cancer.
As well, in partnership with provinces and territories, Indigenous organizations, national organizations, cancer experts, patients, and others, the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer is implementing the Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control to help reduce the number of people who develop cancer, lower cancer-related deaths, and improve the quality of life for those affected.
Cancer is a complex disease and we all have a role to play. While some factors are beyond our control, there are steps we can take to lower the risk of developing cancer by leading a healthy lifestyle.
Early detection is also important. Speak to your health care provider and ask when you should be screened for certain cancers.
Cancer touches the lives of so many, either through a personal diagnosis or that of a loved one. So, this month, join me and Canadians in supporting cancer awareness initiatives across the country.
