The University of Hong Kong (HKU) ranks 13th globally among all institutions this year with a total of 50 academics named on the list of "Highly Cited Researchers 2023" from Clarivate, which marks the highest number of HKU scholars to be included in this list. Clarivate also acknowledges that HKU's significant rise in ranking contributies Hong Kong's ascent into the Top 10 nations and regions in 2023.
According to data analysis firm Clarivate Analytics, a total of 6,849 scholars from 67 countries and regions worldwide have been named Highly Cited Researchers in 2023. Including those awarded in multiple academic fields, the total number of honourees this year reaches 7,125, with 3,793 specializing in distinct academic disciplines and 3,332 significantly impacting interdisciplinary research. Their scholarly works have been extensively cited by international peers, showcasing their considerable influence within the academic sphere.
This year, HKU has experienced a continued increase in the number of selected scholars, maintaining the highest representation among local universities. Highly Cited Researchers are selected for their exceptional research performance, determined by production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication in Web of Science during 2012-2022.
