Independent Reviewer Appointed: Darwin Correctional Centre

After the serious incident at the Darwin Correctional Centre on 13 May, Professor John Paget has been appointed to undertake an independent review.

Professor Paget is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University, and holds a Masters degree from Sydney University Law School and Doctorate in Prison Design.

With a lengthy career in Custodial Services, including holding the position of Inspector, Assistant Commissioner and CEO for Correctional Services NSW, Professor Paget has conducted or been involved in reviews into many correctional centres in Australia and overseas.

Professor Paget was also the Director of the Alexander McConochie Centre Project in Canberra which was the first prison in Australia to be designed and operated under human rights legislation.

The independent review is one of three investigations into the incident.

Quotes attributed to Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Natasha Fyles:

"From the outset we committed to an independent review of this serious incident and that a summary of this review would be made public.

"Professor John Paget comes highly qualified with a lengthy background in correctional services and prison design and operation.

"What occurred at the Darwin Correctional Facility on 13 May was unacceptable, and although it occurred behind the wire with no risk to the wider community the public expects it to be investigated.

"We will review all recommendations made to us in the report to be tabled by Professor Paget, but until then will be allowing all investigations to run their course."
