Invitation For Abstracts: Counterclaims in International Law Conference

This conference aims to explore and engage with the various dimensions of counterclaims in international law. Counterclaims represent a growing phenomenon in international dispute settlement, allowing states and non-state actors to assert their rights, broaden the subject-matter of a dispute or seek accountability for wrongful action in response to claims made against them. Counterclaims are also playing an increasingly important role in shaping the jurisprudence of specific areas of international law, changing the dynamics of dispute settlement processes and influencing outcomes in specific cases, not least in those involving human rights or environmental concerns.

We invite scholars and practitioners to submit abstracts for presentation at the conference.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

• Procedural and substantive challenges of raising and adjudicating counterclaims before international courts and tribunals;
• The role of counterclaims in addressing issues such as human rights or environmental protection;
• Counterclaims as a litigation strategy;

• The effectiveness and implications of counterclaims in specific contexts, such as in ad hoc investor-state dispute settlement or permanent courts and tribunals;
• Comparative analyses of counterclaim practices across different dispute settlement fora;
• Theoretical and conceptual approaches to counterclaims in international law;
• Counterclaims as a tool for advancing justice, equity and accountability.

The conference will be free of charge and with catering offered for all speakers. However, selected speakers and participants will need to cover their own expenses for travel and accommodation.

Submission Guidelines

Abstracts should be between 250-300 words. The title of the presentation, the name and affiliation of the speaker(s) and contact information should also be indicated on the abstract.
