Today in Parliament, Labor has officially abandoned Tasmanian motorists and refused to back our motion to extend the fuel tax cut until the end of this year.
Minister for Workplace Safety and Consumer Affairs, Elise Archer said:
"We know that many Tasmanian households are doing it tough at the moment, which is why we continue to urge the Federal Labor Government to take action and not hit Tasmanian motorists with more taxes.
"We know the reduction has provided significant relief for motorists these past few months, helping to ease the burden on families and businesses across the State.
"With yet another interest rate rise confirmed this week and inflation continuing to bite, it is utterly reprehensible that Tasmanian Labor would not stand with us and send a united message calling for this tax hike to be scrapped.
"Our Government called on the former Liberal Federal Government to scrap the fuel tax before the March Budget– why can't State Labor do the same?
Liberal Member for Lyons, John Tucker said:
"This is a complete sell out from Rebecca White and her State Labor colleagues.
"Is it that hard for Ms White to stand with us, or even pick up the phone to Anthony Albanese and tell him this is not the time to slug motorists with a tax hike?
"Labor complain endlessly about cost of living while pretending to care, but by refusing to back our motion today, their words are once again hollow.
"And with State Labor being taken over from the mainland and under administration, the question needs to be asked – did Ms White and her party choose to back this fuel tax hike, or were they ordered to?
"Tasmania Labor is in tatters, but they need to take a stand and back this call to extend the fuel tax cut until at least the end of this year."
