More security for Darwin buses

The Northern Territory Government is taking additional measures to improve the safety on our public bus network.

In addition to recent improvements that include increased powers for transit and security officers and safety screens for bus drivers, commuters can now expect to see a more visible security presence on board the bus.

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics has launched a three-month trial with an additional 14 security officers to be positioned on key bus routes, riding alongside the passengers and providing a visible deterrent to antisocial behaviour.

Having dedicated Security officers riding the network is a first for the Northern Territory and the trial aims to improve behaviour on and confidence in the bus network.

The security officers have the powers to demand a person to supply their name, date of birth and address. They can also give direction and require someone to get off a bus.

Quotes from Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Eva Lawler

"A safe bus environment is a priority for the Territory Labor Government - for commuters, bus drivers and staff.

"This trial will see officers on board targeted bus routes in Darwin, Casuarina and Palmerston.

"The security officers will help to address antisocial behaviour in a culturally-appropriate manner and make bus travel safer for everyone."

Quotes from Member for Casuarina Lauren Moss

"Casuarina is a key retail destination and also a hub for government, health and other important community services.

"Providing a safer, more secure environment for those who rely on public transport will support our community by reducing antisocial behaviour.

"Security officers on board our buses and at the interchanges will be able to diffuse situations, encourage compliance and provide ongoing support to our hard-working police and transit officers."
