MSA Hub features beef and sheepmeat demonstrations at MLA Updates

Over 350 producers and industry stakeholders recently attended the MLA Updates 2022 event in Toowoomba in SE QLD. With the focus being Adopt and Accelerate, MLA members got to hear the latest on our R&D and marketing programs, ask MLA staff about key projects and get exclusive access to see a range of MLA's latest industry research and technology in action.

Held on Wednesday 30 November 2022 the MLA showcase included an MSA Hub where producers were able to view demonstrations including:

  • MSA beef grading and interactive MSA Index calculation activity with MSA Producer Engagement Officer, Laura Garland (right)
  • MSA sheepmeat Intramuscular Fat measurement using a SOMA device with Dr Peter McGilchrist from UNE Armidale (left).

The MSA Hub also featured a display of a number of Objective Carcase Measurement (OCM) devices which are either currently approved or in development, for use in commercial operations to measure beef and sheepmeat carcase traits such as, AUS-MEAT and MSA Marble score, eye muscle area for beef, and Intramuscular Fat (IMF)%.

The event also featured a range of interactive displays of MLA's investments, including the latest carbon accounting tools, live cattle and sheep displays to demonstrate the use of genomic testing and application of EBVs and ASBVs in herds and flocks, and a selection of on farm technology and robotics including water level sensors and drone mustering.

Videos from the mornings Plenary session with an update from MLA Managing Director Jason Strong and presentations from Communications, Marketing, and Insights managers can be viewed here.

MLA Members were also be able to visit the services hub to get support for a range of MLA and ISC programs, from MSA to NLIS and the new electronic National Vendor Declaration (eNVD) app (see more details below).

To wrap up the event a sundowner social event provided the perfect opportunity to network with other producers, stakeholders and MLA staff.
