New research centre transforming Australian minerals industry

A new Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence is working to deliver revolutionary new technologies and solutions to support a sustainable future for Australia's minerals industry.

ARC Chief Executive Officer, Professor Sue Thomas, welcomed the official opening of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Enabling Eco-Efficient Beneficiation of Minerals at The University of Newcastle yesterday, opened by Senator Hollie Hughes on behalf of the Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge.

The Centre of Excellence is receiving $35 million in funding through the ARC over 7 years to establish a new generation of research leaders who will support the major advancement of modern technologies for the minerals industry.

Professor Thomas said the Centre of Excellence, funded under the ARC Centres of Excellence scheme, will allow top researchers to develop Australia's international standing in the national priority area of Mining Equipment, Resource Technology and Services, Critical Minerals Processing.

"ARC Centres of Excellence facilitate significant collaborations between universities, publicly funded research organisations, other research bodies, governments and businesses in Australia and overseas, all to support outstanding research."

"This ARC Centre of Excellence is working to advance knowledge and establish transformational improvement in minerals beneficiation, essential for meeting global demand for metals used in electric vehicles, infrastructure and smart electronics," said Professor Thomas.

The Centre is a collaboration between The University of Newcastle and 7 other Australian Universities - The University of Queensland, The University of Melbourne, Deakin University, Monash University, The University of South Australia, Curtin University and The University of New South Wales; as well as CSIRO, industry partners FLSmidth, AMIRA Global and Jord International and leading international researchers at Virginia Tech, University of Sheffield, Southern University of Science and Technology, and the University of Colorado.
