New Zealand First has introduced a Member's Bill that will implement a nationwide Container Return Scheme to reduce litter, improve recycling rates, and shift the cost burden away from ratepayers.
"More than 2 billion beverage containers are used by kiwis every year and far too many ends up in our rivers, beaches, and landfills. Ratepayers have been footing the bill for decades while producers get a free pass," says New Zealand First MP Jamie Arbuckle.
"This Bill is not about virtue signalling or chasing unachievable environmental fantasies. It is about introducing a practical solution that actually works."
The bill sets out the core principles leaving operational details to regulation, ensuring flexibility required in the future. The scheme places a small refundable deposit on beverage containers and is well established overseas in Australia, Europe, and North America. Results to date have shown significant reductions in litter and an increase in recycling rates.
"After years of consultation, design work, and millions spent on policy development, Labour walked away from introducing the scheme. New Zealand First will finish the job. We support environmental initiatives that are achievable, effective, and grounded in reality, not the ideological and unworkable policies we've seen in recent years."
