OAS Unveils María Cano Portrait, Launches Ortiz Exhibit

OAS

The Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) of the Organization of American States (OAS) inaugurated this week the exhibition "Nadie: anatomía de un estallido", by Colombian artist Darío Ortiz and curated by art historian Christian Padilla, at its headquarters in Washington, DC.

The exhibition dialogues with the poem "Los nadies" (The Nobodies) by Eduardo Galeano, giving a face and dignity to dispossessed and marginalized individuals in society. It places them at center stage not as heroes and heroines, but as subjects full of dignity, achieved through the rigor of the gaze and the virtuosity of drawing and painting.

"Los nadies" have been social leaders, Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, students, and people displaced from their territories. In a time of global uncertainty, the exhibition invites viewers to question the idea of privilege, to recognize the needs of the forgotten, and to transform the paradigm of how we perceive the other.

With this exhibition, which is free of charge and will remain open to the public until July 22, the AMA reaffirms its vocation as an OAS space dedicated to promoting the art of the Americas as an instrument of dialogue, memory, reflection, and encounter.

During the same inauguration ceremony, the Museum received a portrait of the Colombian social and political leader María Cano from the Permanent Mission of Colombia to the OAS, also created by Darío Ortiz. The artwork will be incorporated into the OAS Gallery of Heroines and Heroes of the Americas, a space that recognizes women and men whose trajectories and contributions have shaped the political, social, and cultural history of the Hemisphere.

María Cano was a prominent defender of workers' rights and a pioneering figure in the political and social participation of women in Colombia. Her induction into the Gallery represents a recognition of her leadership and her commitment to social justice and the defense of historically marginalized sectors.
