Police charge man after 1988 Bendigo sexual assaults

Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad charged a man on Monday as part of their investigation into two sexual assaults in Bendigo over 30 years ago.

A 57-year-old Bendigo man was arrested at his property early Monday morning.

He was subsequently interviewed by police and has been charged with two counts of rape.

The man was remanded and will appear at Bendigo Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

The charges follow two reported incidents in Bendigo in 1988.

The first incident occurred on 15 January on View Street, when a then 20-year-old woman was approached on the street and subsequently sexually assaulted.

The second incident occurred on 19 March after a then, 16-year-old got into a vehicle and was driven to a track off Diamond Hill Road in Kangaroo Flat, where she was sexually assaulted.

The investigation remains ongoing and detectives are looking at whether the two incidents are linked to any further matters.
