Police charge man after damaging close to 40 vehicles at Gold Coast

Gold Coast police have charged a 43-year-old Miami man after he allegedly damaged close to 40 vehicles during a 15-minute period in the early hours of Tuesday morning (9 June).

Police will allege the man began his crime spree at the car park opposite the Burleigh Heads Hotel, damaging a vehicle next to where he had parked his own vehicle.

It is alleged the man then walked in a westerly direction down First Avenue, using a metal pole to smash the front and rear windscreens of vehicles on the street.

The man has then gone north on the Gold Coast Highway before walking down Second Avenue in an easterly direction, continuing to damage cars. He then walked north on The Esplanade, allegedly damaging further vehicles before he was confronted by police.

He was arrested just after midnight without incident.

A total of 36 vehicles were allegedly damaged, including cars with front and/or rear windscreens smashed in, dented doors and damaged side mirrors.

The man was issued a Notice to Appear (NTA) on one count of wilful damage. He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on August 31.
