Police charge two after assaulting police - Inner Sydney

Two people will appear in court today charged after allegedly assaulting police during separate incidents in Inner Sydney yesterday.

About 3.15pm (Thursday 11 June 2020), police were called to a licensed premises on Morehead Street, Redfern, after reports a person was refusing to leave.

Officers from South Sydney Police Area Command attended and spoke to a woman outside, who was abusing staff.

She refused to provide police her details and allegedly spat towards officers, with saliva landing on an officer's boot.

The 47-year-old woman was arrested and taken to Mascot Police Station.

She was charged with excluded person fail to leave premises when required, assault officer in execution of duty, and not comply noticed direction re spitting/coughing - COVID-19

In a separate incident, officers from the Central Metropolitan High Visibility Police Unit were patrolling Martin Place Railway Station just before 5pm yesterday (Thursday 11 June 2020), when they saw a man allegedly slide through the ticket barrier without processing a ticket.

Police approached the man who immediately became aggressive, swearing and yelling abuse before attempting to walk off.

Officers stopped the man who allegedly turned and punched a male senior constable in the face.

Further police attended to assist, and the 56-year-old man was arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station.

He was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, enter/leave restricted area not process ticket – adult, and use offensive language in/near public place/school.

Both have been refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today (Friday 12 June 2020).

The officer did not seek medical treatment.
