Police investigate series of explosions in north west and eastern suburbs

Police are investigating a series of explosions that occurred in Northcote, Ivanhoe and East Kew last night.

Witnesses reported hearing loud explosion noises in the vicinity of James Street, Northcote about 8.25pm.

The second incident occurred in Maltravers Road, Ivanhoe just before 9pm.

Officers attended both locations and located a number of rubbish bins and letterboxes that had been destroyed.

A third incident occurred after an explosive device was placed inside a washing machine that was on the back of a utility parked in Kilby Road, East Kew about

9.10pm.

The vehicle sustained extensive damage and was towed for forensic examination.

No one was injured during any of the incidents and the investigation is ongoing.

Detectives from Darebin Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) will work with detectives from Boroondara and Banyule CIUs to establish if the incidents are linked.
