Police lay charges - Drug seizure - Mataranka

Northern Territory Police seized a large quantity of cannabis yesterday north of Mataranka.

The Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and Northern Traffic Operations were conducting vehicle checks along the Stuart Highway. During a search of two vehicles Drug Detection Dog Danger responded to one of the two vehicles. Further investigation identified a second vehicle of interest. Police located the second vehicle 25km north of Mataranka where the vehicle was searched.

Two plywood boxes were found in the vehicles, containing 47.21 kilograms of cannabis. Three people were arrested and a further search of a residence in Yarrawonga locating drug paraphernalia.

A 34-year-old male was charged with:

  • Possess Schedule 2 dangerous drug - Commercial quantity
  • Supply schedule 2 dangerous drug - Commercial quantity
  • Possess schedule 1 dangerous drug - Public place

A 42-year-old male was charged with:

  • Possess Schedule 2 Dangerous Drug - Commercial quantity
  • Supply Schedule 2 Dangerous Drug - Commercial quantity
  • Possess Schedule 2 Dangerous Drug - Public place
  • Possess Schedule 4 Substance

A 45-year-old female was charged with:

  • Possess Schedule 2 Dangerous Drug - Commercial quantity
  • Supply Schedule 2 Dangerous Drug - Commercial quantity

All three persons have be remanded in custody to attend Katherine Local Court tomorrow.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lawson said, "This seizure had prevented a large amount of cannabis from entering our remote communities and we will continue to target groups such as this who profit from the devastating effects that substance abuse have on our community."
