Rain Expected for Both Sides of Australia

BOM
Significant rain is forecast for both sides of Australia, as a number of weather systems move through in the next week.

First, across Western Australia, a cold front arrives from Friday, bringing showers across the region over the weekend.

And for eastern Australia, we'll see rain building from the first part of next week. First, let's have a look at the total forecast rainfall for the next seven days.

So that's from today, Thursday, all the way out to next Wednesday night. And we can see two areas of focus.

First for Western Australia. Rain arrives from Friday and showers will sweep across the state on Saturday and Sunday.

And rain is forecast all the way from north of Geraldton, down towards Perth and the south coast. And we could see some pockets of heavy rainfall along the west coast.

This cold front will move towards the east and start to drag down some tropical moisture across eastern Australia, so rain will build from the early part of the week, followed by another cold front in the second part of the week.

And we can see moderate falls are possible all the way from inland parts of Queensland, to inland New South Wales and northern Victoria, and also northern parts of Tasmania.

But it is important to note this is just one computer model forecast scenario and the exact total forecast rainfall will start to firm up over the next few days.

So do keep across the latest forecast, particularly if you are across eastern Australia.

But let's have a look at what's driving all this.

Starting off on Thursday, we can see a cold front approaching Western Australia, and northerly winds will pick up right across the west and the south of the state through the day, and we will see showers reaching the far south-west capes later on Thursday night.

This cold front will sweep across the South West Land Division during Friday, bringing a band of rain and isolated thunderstorms, and we could see damaging winds as well as heavy rainfall with some of these thunderstorms, so we could be issuing Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, so keep an eye on those.

But behind the cold front, winds swing around to much colder west to south-westerlies, with showers continuing, particularly about the coast, as another trough pushes through.

Then, heading into the weekend, we do see showers moving through southern parts of WA, but a low pressure system will form to the south of Albany, and that could drive hazardous coastal conditions right along the west and the south coast on both Saturday as well as Sunday, and will be quite cool behind that cold front.

But heading into Sunday, conditions will gradually start to ease across Western Australia.

The cold front will move towards the east, it will weaken back to a trough, but still remain important heading into the new week.

And that's because it will start to drag down some tropical moisture across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria as well as Tasmania.

And by Sunday night we can see patchy areas of rain developing across central as well as eastern Australia.

Into Monday, we see these showers start to consolidate into areas of rain and through the rest of Monday we'll see a band of rain developing, stretching all the way from south-west Queensland to inland New South Wales and down to northern Victoria.

But with northerly winds coming through it will be quite warm and so, although we are expecting precipitation about alpine areas, snow is not expected initially.

But as we head into the second part of the week, another cold front will sweep over.

We see that approaching Western Australia on Monday night, then move to the eastern states on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, bringing another burst of rainfall including to Tasmania.

And that system itself could bring some colder air, as well as very welcome and very timely alpine snow for the ski resorts in the second part of next week.

But having a look at some of those weather watch points with the rain coming through, we could see pockets of heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding initially across Western Australia on Friday and then across the eastern states in the second part of next week.

This could create hazardous travel conditions particularly for those out and about during the school holidays.

And as I mentioned, we could see some snow redeveloping across alpine peaks later next week.

But if you are across Western Australia or the eastern states, do keep across the latest forecasts and warnings over the next week. You can get these on our website and app.
