CoE/Secretary General

Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić has marked in Brussels the European Day of Justice, a joint initiative between the Council of Europe and the European Union, taking the floor at the conference on "The role of the European institutions in upholding the core values of the legal profession in the administration of justice", organised at the European Parliament by the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE).

Marija Pejčinović Burić highlighted the challenges facing legal professionals on the Continent, with a focus on the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

"AI is in the process of transforming the ways in which we live and work and the public services on which we rely. This transformation brings with it many potential benefits: greater speed, accuracy, and efficiency, for example. But it also raises a range of ethical questions that must be addressed. The impact on the legal profession is no exception", she mentioned.

The Council of Europe's European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ), the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime and The Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data (CETS No. 108) were also highlighted.

Later in the day, the Secretary General met with the European Commission Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Vera Jourova. Their exchange of views focused on the follow-up to the Fourth Summit of Heads of State and Government, defining an ambitious path to strengthen democratic security, halt democratic backsliding while dealing with new priorities such as artificial intelligence or the impact of climate change and environmental damage on human rights.
