The sentencing of three men today in the County Court of Victoria for terrorism offences highlights the ongoing need to remain vigilant in the face of threats to our community.
On 20 November 2018 the men were arrested and charged by Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team for planning to undertake a terrorist attack in Melbourne.
The three men were each sentenced to ten years imprisonment with a non-parole period of seven years and six months, after pleading guilty to acts in preparation, or planning a terrorist act in March 2021.
Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said the Morrison Government continues to prioritise the threat of terrorism.
"The unfortunate reality is that there are individuals who wish to do us and our way of life harm. Today's sentencing demonstrates that terrorism remains a threat to our community.
"The Morrison Government will continue to take action to protect our community from terrorist threats, including pursuing new legislation to protect Australians from high risk terrorist offenders following their release from prison."

"I would like to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of the Victoria Joint Counter Terrorism Team which comprises Victoria Police, ASIO and the AFP for their exemplary work throughout the investigation."
Since September 2014 139 people have been charged as a result of 67 counter-terrorism related operations around Australia.
