Statement-from-the-Lord-Mayor Sally Capp

Statement attributable to Lord Mayor Sally Capp:

"While today's announcement is disappointing for all Victorians, we need to pull together to get through this lockdown and reduce the spread of the virus.

"The lockdown is devastating for our business community and we know that trading conditions are going to continue to be challenging for some time. However, the sooner we can get through the lockdown by doing the right thing, the sooner we can help businesses open their doors again.

"Today's announcement means that a number of events will be postponed or cancelled and we will continue to assess the situation based on the latest health advice.

"Queen Vic Market will continue trading because it's essential that people have access to fresh food and vegetables. The general merchandise traders will need to close again on the advice of health authorities, however cafes at the market will be open for takeaway.

"Our focus is on making sure Melbourne is open for business as soon as the restrictions lift. Until the vaccine is rolled out we will need to show resilience and unity during this time of uncertainty.

"When we re-open, our restaurants, cafes and retail stores will need our support more than ever."
