We're helping put culture at the heart of regeneration in County Durham.

Into the Light

To support a planned three-year programme of events and activities, Arts Council England, through the National Lottery, has awarded a partnership of ourselves, Durham County Council and the Culture Durham Partnership a £1.25million 'Place Partnership' award.

Beginning in 2025, the programme, entitled Into the Light, will include world-class events, skills development, and community-lead activities across County Durham.

Inspiring research

Into the Light will include a programme of events, exhibits and experiences exploring art, science and space, drawing on the world-leading research taking place across our University.

Speaking about the programme, Professor Janet Stewart, our Executive Dean (Arts and Humanities), said: "This is a fabulous success for County Durham and an exciting opportunity to put culture at the heart of wider regeneration and growth for the county.

"Durham University is committed to working in partnership to support this ambitious and exciting programme.

"Through our degree courses, museums, collections, visitor attractions and cultural activities, we recognise the important role we play in the cultural landscape of the county.

"This programme will provide a great opportunity to share our research in new and creative ways, to bring arts, science and cultural engagement together."

Space Science Heritage

County Durham has 1,200 years of space science heritage; from the Venerable Bede's early musings on gravity to the University's contribution to the NASA James Webb Space Telescope.
