The World Heritage listed wet tropics in tropical North Queensland is set for an eco-friendly future with the launch of the new Wet Tropics Sustainable Tourism Plan.
Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said the Australian Government had invested more than $220,000 into the plan through the Australian Heritage Grants, with the latest round of Australian Heritage Grants opening today.
"Almost three million people visit Tropical North Queensland annually and we need to ensure we are doing all we can to encourage visitors without compromising the protection of these ecosystems," Minister Ley said.
"Sustainable tourism is critical to the economic health and environmental health of the wet tropics region - this new plan underlines what can be achieved when Governments, agencies and communities work together.
"North Queensland has long been a favourite destination for global visitors, and it is important that we preserve these precious sites as domestic and international tourism returns to the region,"
"This World Heritage-listed site is one of the largest rainforest wilderness areas in Australia with a rich, enduring Indigenous culture, and we want visitors to enjoy the pristine beauty of the region while protecting it for future generations."
Chair of the Authority Leslie Shirreffs PSM said the plan was developed through a comprehensive consultative process with industry stakeholders, Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples, conservation groups and land managers.
"Our tourism industry has shown strength and resilience through incredibly tough times and this plan will help better position operators across the region for the future, while ensuring the Outstanding Universal Value of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is sustained, rehabilitated, and enjoyed for generations to come," Ms Shirreffs said.
