Swift police charge serial bike shop thief

Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man for a range of commercial burglaries and vehicle related crime, including most recently a ram raid burglary in Altona Meadows on Saturday night.

It is believed three men drove through the front windows of a bike store on Queen Street at about 11.55pm on 13 February and loaded their vehicle with a number of bikes before driving off.

The vehicle allegedly involved in the ram raid was sighted by Footscray police overnight with two men inside.

A 26-year-old Drysdale man and 50-year-old Footscray man were both arrested and taken into police custody.

The Drysdale man has been charged with a range of offences linked to an alleged series of incidents, which include:

Ram raid burglary on a bike shop in Douglas Parade, Williamstown on 2 February

Commercial burglary at a liquor store on Sunshine Road in Tottenham on 6 February

Ram raid burglary on a bike shop on Whitehorse Road in Box Hill on 7 February

Ram raid burglary on a bike shop on Dandenong Road, Carnegie on 12 February

Several incidents of motor vehicles being stolen in West Footscray and Flemington

It is believed that over $180,000 worth of items, including bikes and cars, were stolen as a result of the offending.

The Drysdale man has been charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft of motor vehicle, theft of property, handle stolen goods and committing an indictable offence while on bail. He is expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court this evening.

The Footscray man was released pending enquiries.

The investigation into the stolen items and burglaries remains ongoing.
