South Australia Police have today reminded the Show-going community of some basic safety tips ahead of the state's biggest annual event.
Chief Inspector Matt Nairn, from the SA Police Eastern District, said today there were a number of key issues for police during the Royal Adelaide Show – reuniting missing children with their caregivers; preventing theft and road safety in the general area.
"Overall behavioural issues are not a factor with this family-friendly event," he said. "SA Police have been planning for this event for some time now, along with the event organisers and other emergency services.
"We will have a high-visibility presence at the event in keeping with the scale of this community event, but I urge the public to help us help them.
"If you have children with you, get a 'I'm Lost' wristband as soon as you arrive and take a photograph of your child.
"If the worst does happen and you get separated, this will help us quickly reunite you.
"It is also important that visitors to the Show pay close attention to their valuable property – their wallets, phones and their purchases such as showbags.
"If you park in the area, make sure your vehicle is secure and any valuables are hidden from sight.
"Plus if you travel by public transport, please pay attention as you arrive or leave, as we know that excitement or being tired at the end of the day can lead to lapses in judgement."
Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society Chief Executive John Rothwell says the Royal Adelaide Show is a time where family and friends get together for a great day out.
"The Society has a strong commitment to safety in general and encourages all patrons to be aware and alert of their surrounds," he added.
"With half-a-million people attending the Show annually and thousands of animals on-site at any one time Show-goers do need to be mindful of what's happening around them."
SA Police will have patrols at the Showgrounds on foot, bicycle and on horseback.
"I would invite the community to engage with us – introduce your child to a police officer, and make sure they know to approach us if they are lost or feel unsafe," Chief Inspector Nairn said.
The Show Police Station is in the North Western grandstand.
SA Police will also have their very popular corporate display in place in the Jubilee Pavilion – this year with a road safety theme – and there will be regular performances by the Band of the South Australia Police.
The stand, at site G40 close to the food court, will feature the opportunity for visitors to have their photo taken on a Police BMW motorbike for a gold coin donation, visits by Jeff the Road Safety Dog and the chance to make a road safety pledge in the mirror booth.
Community members will also be able to speak to people from the Commissioner for Victims Rights Office about services for victims of crime.
