World class investment in potato industry under threat

Tasmanian Labor
  • Still no action on disease outbreak risk
  • Liberals fail to consult with industry
  • Labor calls for immediate injunction
  • Labor is calling for an urgent resolution to the uncertainty created by the Liberal Government's decision to allow potato imports from interstate.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said disease from interstate potato imports could decimate the $400 million industry and undermine the hard work and financial investment that's been committed by major food companies.

"The State Government must listen to farmers and processors who are horrified at the prospect of potato diseases being introduced to the state," Ms White said.

"The international reputation of Tasmanian potatoes has been built on our disease free status. Why would anyone want to jeopardise this?"

Today, Ms White visited McCain Foods' newly-opened potato storage facility in Burnie.

"McCain has injected millions of dollars and generated hundreds of jobs in Tasmania, and its world class storage facility in Burnie adds value for the company and, most importantly, for growers.

"Because of the extra capacity, farmers can harvest their crops at the optimum time - mitigating the risks associated with wet weather.

"Labor is a strong supporter of our farmers and processors in Tasmania's agriculture sector, and is again calling for the Government to implement an immediate injunction on potato imports to protect this vital local industry."
